Why Winter is the Best Time to Build a Patio

February 23, 2023

It’s winter, you’ve probably got your cozy clothes on, a warm drink in your hand, and no plans to go outside where the weather is frightful. Like most hibernating animals, a comfortable, low-key winter is what you have planned after a busy year with projects, and the absolute last thing on your mind is having a patio built for your home.

But now that you’ve read “patio,” you might consider it a good idea to get one around springtime. You might be surprised to learn that winter is the best time to get your patio built.

Let’s talk about some reasons why.

You will save money

Let’s start with the one most people would care about the most.

Everyone loves a good deal, and one of the best ways to get a good deal on your patio is to have it built when construction companies aren’t in their peak busy time of the year.

Most construction companies raise their prices in the spring when they start getting lots of projects (economics 101: supply & demand).

By getting your contract in the winter when everything is slow, and the company wants to entice new clients with lowered prices, you can save a good chunk of change.

Construction won’t throw off your warm weather groove

Depending on what kind of patio you choose, major construction can be a large factor in your timing.

Imagine yourself this upcoming spring: the birds are chirping, the air is fresh, the sun is shining, and the flowers are blooming. You finally emerge from your stuffy home to enjoy the fresh, great outdoors, but *screech* there’s loud machinery, workers, and an unsightly construction mess that is in the way of your view.

You can’t do anything in your backyard without being a liability to the building crew. No cookouts, backyard parties, or just outdoor relaxation until it is finished.

That doesn’t sound like an enjoyable way to spend your spring or summer days.

Now think back to this present winter; how much time are you spending in your backyard? Unless your first name is Frosty and you have a carrot nose, you’re likely not outside for extended periods.

By having your patio built in the winter, the construction process will be much less of a disturbance in your life and won’t get in the way of you enjoying the season.

Your grass and plants are more protected

In the winter, your grass and turf are dormant, protected by a layer of cold, dry leaves.

As long as your soil isn’t a saturated sloppy mess, your yard won’t be affected so much by the heavy machinery rolling on it or any construction activities that a patio build requires.

You will have your patio in time to enjoy it

If you choose to build your patio in the spring when everyone else is doing the same, you may have to be placed on a waitlist. If this is the case, you may not even have your patio built by the time summer comes around.

Inversely, you will likely be at the top of the list by getting it built in the winter. You can have your patio finished in time to enjoy spring events like Easter, and you definitely won’t have to sacrifice any summer entertaining events.

Another benefit of getting your patio built in the winter is that if you want additional features like an outdoor kitchen or fire pit, you have enough time to get them done and enjoy them in the upcoming seasons.

You will have more time to get permits and approvals

On that note, you will also need to get permits and approvals from organizations like the city or Homeowners Association in the spring.

They receive a tsunami of requests just like yours, and getting approvals takes much longer, and construction can’t begin until every “i” is dotted and “t” is crossed.

Meanwhile, you’re missing out on seasonal memory-making events. In the winter, when everything has slowed down, the line to getting those permits approved is much shorter, and you won’t experience the glacial delay of approval.
